While most people may disagree the inclusion of shoegaze / post black metal as a sub genre of metal, it is undeniable that it is one of the most beautiful forms of music in existence today. Here, in India though, not many bands opt to play this beautiful form of music, as bands prefer the extreme genres instead. One of the few bands that do play post black metal in India is The End, a one man project from Mumbai. Last year, this band released its first demo, which gives an insight into what the band has to offer in the near future.
The demo, titled ‘You Made The Rain Disappear’ is a rough 22 minute affair that contains a good mix of melancholic ambiance and rough black metal segments. The music sounds very atmospheric and distant, as the demo kicks off with an ambient section which gives way to rough double bass drumming.
Svartblod’s attempt to bring out the depressive beauty through his music is a commendable effort and the distant soundscapes he uses, like the sound of children playing for example, aid him greatly to meet this end. There is not much to say in terms of the vocals as they are quite sparse and when they do make an appearance, they sound so distant that they blend into the overall atmosphere.
The demo is not without its fair share of flaws. For instance, the drums sound a bit too artificial and the black metal segments seem quite disjointed with the ambient parts in certain places. That being said, the attempt by Svartblod is a very appreciable one, as he does manage to communicate his ideas partially, if not completely. For a rough demo though, it is alright. Given proper studio treatment and mixing, this could be an enjoyable record.
