These days, creating a concept album seems to be in vogue and many bands try to come up with a “concept” album that has no real story to share. Swampcult, the enigmatic duo from Netherlands on the other hand take up established tales of mystery and create their own musical rendition of said tale. Their second full length effort titled ‘The Festival’, focuses on the H.P. Lovecraft short story of the same name. Swampcult’s style of black metal meets doom, is perfectly suited for this weird, mysterious story and the band makes best use of the atmosphere to drive the narration forward.

The man behind Gnaw their Tongues, Mories, has had 27 releases over the past 10 years. This is excluding all his other side projects and split releases. I guess this goes to show how efficient a band can be, when one person is in charge of everything. But does the quality match the quantity of these releases? Judging by the latest release from Gnaw their Tongues, titled ‘Abyss of Longing Throats’, the quality is not lacking. The music here is not your typical metal sound. It’s an aural experience that combines elements from black metal, drone and industrial music to create this deep chasm, where darkness is all one sees.

It always has baffled me why reissues of thrash are always unappreciated and get lesser attention compared to those of the death metal genre. I believe thrash metal of 2-3 decades back gives you same type of raw brutality that the seasoned death metal fans love those reissues for. In any case, we have here a reissue of a 1996 album ‘Walpurgis = Sabbath Of Lust’ by thrash death band from Netherland, Inquisitor.

This album, ‘Burning Bridges in a World of Death’ by the band Chain of Dogs was intriguing indeed. And the fact that it has both thrash and folk influences incorporated within the confines of the music presented in this album was even more the reason to explore this album.

There are two types of people in this world. A normal music fan would look upto his music and expect to find something that soothes him and relaxes him. Then there is the other kind that look upto their music and expect something powerful and ferocious, something that takes him on a dark and wild ride. Black metal is a genre that often caters to the second category and this is a band that should satisfy anyone looking for a vicious force to impact him. Sammath has been an underground powerhouse since the dawn of the genre itself and though it hasnt gotten the same amount of recognition as it’s Norwegian and Swedish peers, this band has been putting out raw and insanity filled black metal over the past 20 years.
