“Cave man metal” is a term often used by critics (including yours truly) to address music that is dumbed down for the least common denominator. Primitiv proves to a be an exception where the band embraces the idea of primitive sounding music to create a death metal album that is unapologetically heavy and relentless in its intent to crush everything. The band’s debut album ‘Immortal & Vile’ comes off as a concept album of sorts, where Primitiv cross the thresholds of sounding old school, taking the music into ancient realms. Every element of the music lends itself to the ancient feel of the music, resulting in a coherent and well put together album.

Poland has long been a breeding ground for quality death metal, bands like Decapitated, Vader and Behemoth, who are among the biggest names out there, and granted a lot of bands doing what these bands are known for. But there’s still interesting stuff to be found in the underground. Like Kult Mogil.

Released on the very credible Pagan Records, ‘Anxiety Never Descending’ is the debut full-length of Kult Mogil. Released on CD,  Christmas eve 2015, with vinyl and, (so all you trve kvlt fvcks can play this on your shitty cassette deck to get that raw, authentic sound) cassette coming in 2016.

As a young lad in a developing scene, who had just discovered death metal, my introduction to Third Sovereign happened back in 2007 when their full length ‘Destined to Suffer’ came out. The band’s brutal, straightforward approach to death metal fascinated my young mind and it was my first encounter with death metal from India. As the years passed, death metal in the country branched out into different styles while Third Sovereign lie dormant in terms of releases. After 9 years, the band prepares to make a comeback on Transcending Obscurity India with their second full length, titled ‘Perversion Swallowing Sanity’. Though there is a wide gap between the releases, the band’s sound harkens back to the first couple of albums and they manage to sound as brutal as ever.

It’s quite surprising that we made it to 2016 in one piece. 2015 turned out to be a huge downer of a year with so many tragedies marking the highlights and on a personal front too, it was a tasking period. But speaking purely in terms of metal releases, 2015 is easily one of the best years with chock full of releases spanning the entire metal spectrum. Picking out the top releases in such a year is a task that is easier said than done. For last year’s list, we did a countdown of the ten records which I felt were the best. This time though, the list has been expanded to include 15 albums and the albums are not numbered. The reason behind this, is that each of these albums is as good as the other and the numbering should not be indicative of the quality of the album. With that in mind, here is what made 2015 so memorable in my opinion.
