It’s not often that one comes across some progressive black metal. While the progressive term often finds itself attached to genres like death metal, heavy metal, power metal etc, black metal is usually prefixed with terms like avant-garde and experimental. While one might argue that progressive black metal does exist in stuff like the later Emperor records, the early Ihsahn albums and the early albums of bands like Deathspell Omega, these albums are never credited as progressive black metal. It is understandable as progressive metal and black metal are polar opposites in terms of their themes and execution. While progressive metal relies on complex structuring and technical playing, black metal emphasises on nihilism which is reflected in the music and production aspects as well. Glasgow based Maelstrom attempt to combine these two on their latest full length ‘Sunlight’, leading to some interesting results
Last year, when this website was launched, we put together a compilation of underground death metal tracks (which you can still find here) and on that compilation, we featured Warcrab from U.K.. Last year these guys released their EP titled ‘Ashes of Carnage’ and somehow it slipped under our radar. Now Contagion Records recently re-released this EP and this time, I’m not going to miss the opportunity to talk about it. Sonically, Warcrab make one of the heaviest forms of metal by marrying sludge metal atmosphere and thick guitar tones with death metal song writing.
This Zine has existed well over a year now. I would like to thank each and every viewer of this page for your continued support that has helped us to grow into what we are today.
Over the period we’ve been operating, we’ve received countless number of promos from underground bands seeking recognition for their work and talent. Looking at some of these artists, it’s a saddening fact that they dont get the level of attention that their skills deserve. Our primary aim here, in Metal Gallows, is to put the spot light on such bands who’s music simply must be heard.
Death metal is a genre that lot of the promos we receive can be classified under. So for our first compilation, we’ve gathered 18 bands whose music truly phenomenal and must be heard by every fan of the genre. Now the bands here vary from traditional death metal to technical and progressive death metal, with everything in between. So without further ado, here’s Metal Gallows Death Metal Compilation Vol I: http://www9.zippyshare.com/v/91589731/file.html.
2013 is drawing to an end and thanks to this webzine, I had the opportunity to check a lot of underground bands that I normally wouldn’t have listened to. It is quite surprising how sometimes a band can be so talented and yet remain so underrated and unknown. I can quote a lot of bands like that, which I discovered this year. The latest addition to that list is the London based Death Metal / Grindcore outfit called Meat Train.
