Servants of the Mist are a 6 piece doom metal band from Tampa, South Florida. ‘Gross Knowledge of Genital Mutilation’ is the follow up to their first EP, ‘Suicide Sex Pact’ . The album’s lyrics explores concepts such as sexual sadism, suicide and death. The band draws influences from many genres, ranging from crust punk to funeral doom.
After looking at the album cover, I thought twice before listening to the album. Most death metal lyrics are satirically perverse, but this album is dead serious. The first song, ‘Sadism and Suffering’ is a prelude to ‘Undeserving’, a really heavy mix of funeral doom and sludge. The vocals and guitars add to the slow and dark atmosphere. The song is a little too long at around 12 minutes, which makes the song a little too monotonous .
The next song, ‘Commit Suicide’ is a GG Allin cover. This song makes the album interesting, adding a crust punk edge to the doom dominated album. The self titled track , ‘Gross knowledge of Genital Mutilation’ is a follow up to ‘Undeserving’, once again with heavy and sludgy riffs.
Even though the album is well produced, the keyboard is virtually unheard throughout the album. The lyrics and song names add to the sadistic atmosphere created by the album. Overall it’s an interesting mix of sludge and funeral Doom.
