The history of extreme metal in India would be incomplete without the mention of a band called IIIrd Sovereign. Hailing originally from Mizoram, this band emerged as the flag bearers for the extreme metal scene not only in the north east, but the country as a whole. After their formation in 2003, the band soon shifted base to Delhi, where they garnered acclaim from critics and crowd.
Constantly undergoing line up changes, did not do much to stop the band’s momentum as they went on to release an EP (‘Horrified Visions’ in 2006) and a full length (‘Destined to Suffer’ in 2007) which stand as landmark releases in the Indian metal underground. These albums inspired many other bands to release albums of their own.
The band split up in 2010, but the hiatus did not last long. IIIrd Sovereign took rose once again in 2013, shifting base back to Aizwal, Mizoram once again. Aside from the aforementioned achievements, the band’s success story includes opening for Decapitated at Deccan Rock 2011, headlining WORME Fest 2011 along with Undying Inc, opening for Dying Fetus at Shillong Open Air in 2014 and performing at the recent Rolling Stones Metal Awards, Mumbai 2014.
The band is currently working on their second full length album and the line-up stands as follows:
Vedant Kaushik Barua – Vocals
Benjamin L. Pautu – Guitars
Jonah Lalawmpuia Hnamte – Bass
Reuben Lalchuangkima – Drums
IIIrd Sovereign will be returning to demolish Delhi at Outrage Festival India on 13th July 2014 @ Blue Frog, Delhi.
