Hailing from Vancouver, Canada, Kafirun are a new anti-Islamic black metal quartet whose new demo ‘Death Worship’ is well worth a few moments of your time, that is if you like dark, slowed down almost bestial black metal with a sinister, chanting/haunting vibe!
Opening track ‘Beyond the Flesh Vessel’ starts just as I’ve described but further into its musical tapestry comes a hungrier sound, a ravenous out-pouring of blistering emotions, savagery personified through volatile blast beats, violent riffs and harrowing vocals. As this tracks then slowly dampens its flame and mellows towards the end, it is replaced by the far more rampant mascinations of ‘Killer of all Man’ where flurry of blast beats and maniacal guitar play help to create a bustling, unsettling sound, one of violence, malevolence and hatred!
However as the sound drops and a short bass solo rumbles into being, the band ramp up both the intensity and the sinister nature of their being with more grueling growls and screams and a thundering, catchy musical flow! To end with, Kafirun bash out one more fast paced slab of ravenous death in ‘Thousand Spears’ and whilst I disagree with the bands mantra of “Islam is the plague/Kafirun is the cure” (Giving the band a slightly NS feel – Plus surely ALL religion is the plague? Not just Islam) there can be no denying they produce powerful, aggressive black metal! An interesting proposition all round and worth checking out!
