Glowsun are a three piece heavy psych band based out of Lille, France. They’re a recent addition to the Napalm Records roster. Having released two full lengths filled with stoner vibes before, with their most recent album ‘Beyond the Wall of Time’, Glowsun are putting out some of the tightest stoner psych out there.
Beyond the wall of time consists of 7 songs, clocking at a total of 46:44 minutes. Before I get to the music, I’d like to talk a bit about psychedelic / stoner album artwork. Psychedelic album artwork tells me what I can expect from the album. The artwork of ‘Beyond the Wall of Time’ is brilliant. It’s of a woman who has clearly transcended time. That’s exactly what this album is- It’s an album which transcends time.
The thing with many good stoner rock and psychedelic rock albums is that the flow of the music is broken if you break it up into songs, instead of listening to the album as a whole piece. On this note, I am going to review the album as a whole.
The album starts with the ticking of a clock and a heartbeat akin to the gods of psychedelic rock- Pink Floyd. The drums kick in at around the 2nd minute, progressing into a nice stoner doom groove, and then switching to psychedelia. Throughout the album, the band switches between these two styles, creating a very captivating and trance-like atmosphere. One of the plus points about this album has to be the work of the rhythm section. Throughout the album, the drum and bass smoothly transcend between various tempos. A mix of harsh and clean vocals appear for the first time on the dreamy psych rock track ‘Against the clock’, which leads to the very spacey three minute outro.
Even though the album is very good, my only gripe with the album is that it brings nothing new to the realm of stoner and psychedelic rock. I’d like to end by quoting a local stoner who listened to the album with me: “The album was fuckin’ insane dude. The musical styles were very diverse but managed to keep the same vibe. Very pleasant to the ears”
