Black metal with goth rock elements can be very good or very bad. ‘Einfallen – A Tale ov Torment & Triumph’, by Beautality, manages to be both. The black metal parts of the album sounds great. Lots of blast beats and brutality. The drummer delivers some solid blast beats and all is fine. Unfortunately, when it comes to the goth rock parts the drummer suddenly sounds like Lars Ulrich on a bad day, and the goth rock singing is not something the singer should even try.
The info I received with the promo describes this as atmospheric black/post-metal. Sure, the black metal parts got a little atmospheric feeling, but the post metal part? I can’t hear it. It’s clear that they’re influenced by the goth rock bands of the 80’s, so maybe the drummer is trying to sound like the drum machines used back then. Unfortunately the drums have that dry sound that Metallica used on ‘The Black Album’. I’ve never liked that myself, so maybe it’s just me.
If the album was all black metal it would be a good black metal album and I would rate it 80%, but the goth parts makes me want to turn it off every time I listen to it. I also feel that making this a double album is way too much. A long EP would be better. I never thought I would complain about songs being too long. The shortest song here is close to 13 minutes and the rest of the songs are 18-19 minutes. Some bands manages to pull off having songs that long, Beautality isn’t one of those bands.
