Pirates, Booze, party and all out swashbuckling mayhem, Alestorm have all those bases covered and have definitely blown their previous albums out of the water with their latest release ‘Sunset on the Golden Age’. This band can be characterized in one word : “Freedom” which is what metal is all about and this band has plenty of it to show for. The buoyant lyrics coupled with the vocalist’s charisma throughout every song make this band stand out in many ways.
In previous albums the listeners would mistake their charismatic music with that of childlike fun and that may have been true but not anymore! The band have truly reached great heights in their musical sense and have matured to a great deal. With this album it is clear that the band have finally found their stride and in their sense are truly the great pirates that should be feared in all of the seven seas.
The ‘Pirate’ theme that they bring is clearly shown in their take of music. It truly is difficult to keep that ship afloat in the vast sea of metal and that seemed to be the case for a while but now it’s a fact that they are blazing through the treacherous seas with little fear, guns ablaze and cannons firing. The drumming is like that of cannon fire desolating its foes, the guitars pierce through like swords and knifes, bass guitar like that of the sails of the ship muster force to surge forward, keyboards being the bow and the stern define the outlook of the ship and their vocalist being the captain with his charisma leads this pirate crew to wreak havoc and have bundles of fun in the process. The tracks ‘Drink’, ‘Magnetic North’ and ‘1741(The Battle of Cartagena)’ stand out the most for me.
‘Drink’ is a straightforward song with an enthralling chorus that is sung by thousands of people as they pillage, drink and party all night long. ‘Magnetic North’ is a mid-tempo affair which is brilliantly orchestrated with a sensual taste of folk music and intense moments throughout the song and finally the track ‘1741(The Battle of Cartagena)’ is a song which is all about a great battle staged on the treacherous blue sea as the name signifies and this song only gets better as you listen to it more and more.
All in all the band has improved dramatically and is definitely a force to be reckoned with. The pirates are back so you’d best watch your backs mateys, for a storm is brewing and at the eye you’ll find Alestorm, full of fight and ready to rumble.
