Looking at the present day scenario, with all the political and war tensions, perhaps grindcore is the most apt sub genre to listen to. It serves the ultimate ‘fuck you’ to all forms of oppression. And what better band to deliver it than Belgian mincecore forefathers, Agathocles. This is perhaps the only band which is known for it’s innumerable split releases than it’s full length. This band is back once again with another split and this time it’s with India’s very own Nauseate who cite Agathocles as their prime influence. So this split is a like a union that was meant to be.
The first half of the split is populated by some nasty tunes from the Belgians. Fans of the band would instantly identify the band’s trademark style of grindcore. For those who are unaware, let me describe it. It’s a brutal assault of short songs that do not lack anything in the heaviness section. The songs carry a groove that is catchy, which for songs less that a minute long is very commendable.
This time around, the tracks carry a crust punk vibe to them, which is greatly aided by the flat sounding production. The tracks have a tendency of staying with the listener inspite of their short life span. Agathocles provide a stable first half to the split which should appease old fans of the band while also gaining them some new followers.
Bangalore based grind band Nauseate bring up the rear end of the split with some fuzzy fury. The song structuring is almost similar to that of the openers, except its pure grind this time around. The riffs here too are quite simple and effectively memorable. The fuzzy guitar tone adds a sharp edge to the music. The difference between the two sides of the split is the style of production.
The muddy and raw production may not appeal to all, but for grind connoisseurs, this is nothing new. The mixing could have been done better as the sound feels compressed. Production aside, this is some well written grind that does not disappoint expectations.
Overall this split is pure grind that offers 26 minutes of music that assaults the living breath out of the listener. Get it if you think you can handle the grind.
