I´ve always been a fan of split singles and EPs, and especially when its a collaborative effort of two artists. One of my favorite releases of last year was the collaboration EP of Merzbow and Full of Hell, and one of my all-time favorites is the collaboration of The Dillinger Escape Plan and Mike Patton. Collaborations can sometimes bring you the best of both worlds and other times something completely new. On ‘Diade(ms)’, two Italian metal acts, Abaton and Viscera///, swap a few members back and forth on this two-song split single.
Viscera/// is a metallic hardcore band along the lines of fellow countrymen The Secret. Abaton on the other hand got more of the blackened, sludgy, doom metal á la Tombs going. Not saying they sound like them but they share some of the same aesthetics and atmospheres, though Abaton is more heavy on the blackened side of things.
The melodies are sinister and gives the atmosphere a doomsday vibe, the vocals change from the low growl to high-pitch screaming. There is hardly room to breathe other than the intro and outro as the songs in-between are crushingly heavy. Given that these two bands are not too far apart genre-wise, they’re not exactly breaking new ground here, but these are good songs that shows what these bands are capable of.
Maybe a little short with only two songs, but it leaves me wanting to check out more of these, to me, previously unknown bands.
